New trends in electric motors and selection for electric vehicle propulsion systems

Abstract: The increase in the numbers of electric vehicles (EVs) is seen as an upgrading of the existing vehicles for various reasons. This calls for an in-depth analysis of the heart of these vehicles-the motor. A motor in an electric vehicle propulsion system is a crucial component that has the ability to affect the efficiency, weight, cost, reliability, power output and performance. Hence a detailed comparative study, that compares the existing types and topologies of various motors, is the need of the hour. The vari… Show more

“…During the last ten decades, much automotive industry started to change its motor structure and control techniques to improve EVs performance. In [14] majority of EV motors are using rare earth magnet material high cost, the main advantage which are of BLDC motor is high torque density and power density. In [15,16] main issues in BLDC conventional and in-wheel motors are torque ripple, faulttolerant capability, EMI, acoustic noise, control problem in field weakening ability, and high cost of PM materials.…”

“…PMs can be further classified as brushless DC (BLDC) or permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). BLDC motors work with trapezoid back-current waves, whereas PMSMs use sinusoidal current waves [57] . Comparatively, PMSMs offer better efficiency parameters [54] .…”

“…Also, maintaining the battery to operate at an optimum temperature has improved the battery's life span and increased in EV range [14]. Then, opting for newer, highly efficient designed motors like SRM, PMSM, and BLDC over DC motors shows better performance and less fuel is consumed [15], [16]. In [17], the design of an energy-optimal control method to improve the motor drive system's efficiency and extend the driving range of electric vehicles is studied.…”
