This article reviews the contributions to the special issues of the annual European Conference on Nonlinear Optical Spectroscopy (ECONOS) since its establishment in 2002. The review does not only highlight the developments of the scientific areas related to nonlinear optical spectroscopy in Europe but also shows how different sub‐fields evolved globally because ECONOS evolved as an international meeting attracting participants from all over the world. Four main topical categories are identified: (1) theoretical and instrumental developments, (2) applications to gas‐phase and combustion systems, (3) applications to condensed phase matter, and (4) development and applications of micro‐spectroscopy methods. The purpose of the review is to provide a concise overview of recent advances in the broadly defined field of Raman spectroscopy as reflected in part by the many articles published each year in the Journal of Raman Spectroscopy (JRS) as well as in trends across all related journals publishing in this research area. Context for the review is provided by considering statistical data on citations for the Thompson Reuters ISI Web of Science by year and by subfield of Raman spectroscopy. Additional statistics of number of papers and posters presented by category at the XXII International Conference on Raman Spectroscopy (ICORS 2010) is also provided. Papers published in JRS in 2009, as reviewed here, reflect trends at the cutting edge of Raman spectroscopy which is expanding rapidly as a sensitive photonic probe of matter at the molecular level with an ever widening sphere of novel applications.

Laser scanning photothermal microscopy: fast detection and imaging of gold nanoparticles

We report on the design and construction of a laser scanning photothermal microscope and present images of gold nanoparticles of size as small as 5 nm. Laser scanning method allows fast image acquisition at 80 μs pixel dwell time so that a 500 × 500 pixel image is acquired in 20 s. Photothermal imaging at fast time scales can have potential applications in variety of fields including tracking of biomolecular transport processes.
