New Trends and Developments in Metrology

Abstract

is a professional engineer with more than 10 years of experience in automotive industry. He worked in Electrical and Electronic R&D and Supply Quality departments of racing/luxury Italian vehicles manufacturers such as Ferrari F1 team, Maserati S.p.A., and Automobili Lamborghini. Currently he is electrical/ electronic project responsible of new Alfa Romeo premium car. After his master's degree in Telecommunication Engineering, he received his PhD in Information Engineering; he has published several papers and conference contributions about electronic measurements and digital signal processing. "Modern Metrology Concerns" was the first book edited by Luigi Cocco for InTech in 2012.sensors, examples of the practical applications, and future trends in this technology are presented. Force, Pressure, Dimensions and SignalsChapter 6 summarizes some recent advances in development of force measuring systems for high-temperature nano-indentation and ultrahigh vacuum tribometry; an example of force measuring head for an ultrahigh vacuum system for tribological characterization of materials and lubricants is shown.Chapter 7 explains an innovative technique to measure the surface pressure distribution of aerodynamic components using pressure-sensitive paint, comparing it with the traditional method in terms of complexity, cost, timing, and performance.Chapter 8 studies a least-square-based self-calibration of two-dimensional precision metrology systems and a holistic self-calibration algorithm, comparing it with traditional standard process in terms of accuracy, robustness, and simplicity; a practical self-calibration procedure is available.Chapter 9 suggests theoretical and numerical approaches that can be used for modeling nonlinear effects in the design of power amplifiers, used widely in modern industrial production lines of high-resolution digital TV systems. Soft MetrologyChapter 10 is focused on soft measurements (subject to human perception and interpretation); theoretical overview of main concepts and a mathematical model to measure a "soft measurand" through a dedicated index (IPER -Influence on Performance Index) are proposed.I would like to express my very great appreciation to all authors for their valuable contribution; I would also like to thank my fiancée Rosy for all her support and patience.
