“…Besides, several alternative structures neglected by the stage-wise superstructure 24 are considered in the modified transshipment model. 43,44 An illustration for nonisothermal mixing is shown in Figure 2-1, where a stream of 40 °C is merged with another stream in temperature level 40 °C. Note that the temperature of the other stream is a variable that is above 40 °C, while the flow rate of both streams are also variables.…”

“…With the constructed temperature intervals and the location of each hot and cold stream, the modified , transshipment model of Papoulias and Grossmann is adopted to describe the heat flow pattern. Isothermal mixing and nonisothermal mixing can happen in the temperature levels by mass flows from source streams to demand streams and mass flows between substreams, whereas the indirect heat transfers can happen in each temperature interval.…”

“…Numerous design technologies and methods have been developed with extensive application to industrial practice, as stated in review articles 1,2 and research publications, 3,4 to name a few. Of all the previous works on HEN synthesis, the approach that gains dominance is the one where a superstructure is proposed together with the formulation of a mixed‐integer nonlinear model (MINLM), which can be solved using mixed‐integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) procedures, 5,6 many times using decompositions, 7,8 or stochastic‐based methods (metaheuristics‐based methods), such as genetic algorithms, 9,10 simulated algorithms, 11,12 particle swarm optimization, 13,14 hybridization between different algorithms, 15,16 etc. We do not elaborate further on the literature review of the stochastic‐based methods, which cannot guarantee optimality, much less global optimality, and in general need specialized parameter tuning for a good computational performance.…”

“…Some of the most relevant efforts made in the last 5 years that do not address global optimization are by Wu et al, 20 who replace binaries by nonlinear approximations and solve an NLP using BARON because any other solver does not work without initial values. Hong et al 21 developed a new transshipment model that considers splitting, by-passing and recycling of streams as well as nonisothermal mixing (counting exchangers in a similar way that Barbaro and Bagajewicz 12 proposed). Beck and Hofmann, 22 aiming at reducing solution time, presented a novel linearization approach for HEN synthesis based on stage-wise superstructure ending in a MILP problem whose solutions are used to initialize the MINLP model.…”
