Objectives. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Chamomilla recutita on the healing of ulcers in rats. Study Design. A 5-mm wound was inflicted on the tongue of 36 rats. Treatment group animals were treated topically with 0.04 mL/day of chamomile ointment, whereas control group animals were not treated. Animals were sacrificed after 3, 7 or 10 days. Semi-quantitative analysis of the degree of inflammation, fibroblast count and wound size was performed, as well as histometric analysis of re-epithelialization and percentage of collagen fibers of the lesion. Results. Animals treated with chamomile showed the best results regarding epithelialization and percentage of collagen fibers after 10 days. As expected, time had a statistically significant effect (p< 0.05) on fibroblast count, epithelialization, inflammation and wound size; animals sacrificed at 3 days showed the worst results. Conclusions. Chamomile stimulated re-epithelialization and the formation of collagen fibers after 10 days of treatment; it did not, however, influence inflammation or fibroblast count.

A variação na composição química do óleo essencial das folhas em três populações silvestres de Lychnophora ericoides, com ou sem odor, indicou a presença de dois grupos de óleos em relação ao odor das amostras. O primeiro incluiu amostras de odor aromático contendo altas percentagens de -bisabolol (34 23%) e o-cimeno (8,4 6,9%). No grupo II, as amostras não apresentaram qualquer odor e os constituintes majoritários foram o óxido de cariofileno (11 9%) e o -elemeno (5,7 6,9%). Em todas as populações estudadas co-existem os dois tipos de óleos, embora a maioria das amostras aromáticas provenientes do Parque Estadual da Serra de Caldas Novas se diferenciem quimicamente daquelas do Parque Nacional de Brasília e de Santo Antônio do Descoberto. As variações químicas sugerem claramente, além da influência geográfica, diferenças genéticas entre indivíduos nas populações. O alto conteúdo de -bisabolol suporta o uso medicinal folclórico de arnica como antiinflamatório.Variations in the composition of the leaf essential oils of wild Lychnophora ericoides, with and without scent, which were grown in three sampling sites, were examined by GC-MS. Results were submitted to principal component and cluster analysis which allowed for two groups of essential oils to be distinguished with regard to scent: cluster I with specimens exhibiting an aromatic scent and containing a high percentage of -bisabolol (34 23%) and o-cymene (8.4 6.9%); cluster II with specimens without any scent and characterised by a high percentage of caryophyllene oxide (11 9%) and -elemene (5.7 6.9%). The two types of oil coexist in all the populations under study, although patterns of aromatic samples deriving from Caldas Novas' State Park reveal chemical differences in relation to the samples from Brasília's National Park and Santo Antônio do Descoberto. Such chemical variations clearly suggest, apart from a geographical influence, genetic differences between individuals in the populations. Separation and Identification of Antibacterial Chamomile Components Using OPLC, Bioautography and GC-MS

Components of 50% ethanolic chamomile (Matricaria recutica L.) flower extract, previously found antibacterial in a TLC-bioautographic study, were separated and isolated by the use of on-line OPLC, which consisted of an OPLC 50 BS system, an on-line coupled flow-through UV detector, and a manual fraction collector. The collected peaks were investigated by GC-MS analysis and by TLC re-chromatography with subsequent visualization, performed after use of the vanillin-sulphuric acid reagent, or under UV illumination, or applying bioautographic detection. The main compounds of the collected 11 fractions were identified by GC-MS. The results showed that the antibacterial effect of 50% ethanolic extract of chamomile is ascribable to cis-, trans-spiroethers, and the coumarins like herniarin and umbelliferone. Chamomile (Matricaria recutica L.) is a very familiar and widely used herb in traditional folk medicine. The flower is a common ingredient of herbal teas because it contains substances which have anti-inflammatory, sedative, analgesic, antispasmodic, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties [1][2][3][4]. The beneficial effects are related to different classes of therapeutically interesting ingredients such as essential oil components, flavonoids, and coumarin derivatives [1, 5, and 6]. The chamomile oils were effective e.g. [17,18]. Herniarin, the main coumarin component in chamomile, is a more effective antimicrobial agent than umbelliferone, which may be realized by its demethylation [19]. Umbelliferone has been described as a stress metabolite in M. recutita. The amount of umbelliferone characteristically, while that of herniarin mildly rose in the plant after biotic and abiotic stress influences [6,20]. It was also observed that chamomile oil component (Z)-spiroether was lowered after abiotic stress, but increased in the case of biotic stress [6]. Searching for bioactive natural products requires appropriate bioassays, focused on the desired activity (e.g. antifungal, antibacterial).
