New Ternary Complexes of Copper(II) with 2,2′‐Bipyridine (Bpy) and Phosphocholine (PCh) or the Quaternary 1‐(2‐Phosphonomethoxy)ethyl Derivative of 2,4‐Diaminopyrimidine (PMEDAPy)

Abstract: The polynuclear CuII complexes [Cu4Cl2(bpy)4(PCh–)2](ClO4)4·H2O (1) and [Cu6(bpy)6(PMEAPy–)4](ClO4)8·2H2O (2), where bpy = 2,2′‐bipyridine, PCh– = phosphocholine {[2‐(phosphonooxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium} and PMEDAPy– = 1‐[2‐(phosphonomethoxy)ethyl]‐2,4‐diaminopyrimidine, have been synthesized and characterized by X‐ray single‐crystal analysis. Compound 1 crystallizes in the triclinic system (P‐1 space group) and consists of tetranuclear CuII units, which are threefoldly bridged by μ3‐O,O′,O″‐phosphate groups … Show more

“…However, in the present work, the hexanuclear cluster in compound 1 is comprised of two different coordination geometries (square pyramidal and distorted square planar) and two different valence states (+2 and +1) of copper atoms. These exclusive features distinct the hexanuclear cluster in compound 1 from the other reported hexanuclear clusters …”

“…These 2D layers are connected to PW 12 polyanions through terminal oxygen atoms O2 and O2* to form a 3D framework as shown in Figure b. The hexa-nuclear cluster, reported in the compound 1 , is structurally related to the hexanuclear complexes reported in the literature . But, in the reported compounds, all the Cu atoms in the cluster are present in the +2 oxidation state and in square pyramidal geometry.…”

“…Another example of the ferromagnetic exchange was observed in (μ 3 -CO 3 )[Cu 3 (Medpt) 3 (ClO 4 ) 3 ](ClO 4 ) with an analogous triangular conformation of {μ 3 -CO 3 Cu 3 } (Medpt stands for bis(3-aminopropyl)methylamine) . However, it should be stressed that a triangular arrangement of Cu(II) with a central μ 3 -type bridge does not guarantee a ferromagnetic behavior, because there are known compounds containing {Cu 3 PO 3 } unit with ferromagnetic Cu···Cu interactions, but with totally different dihedral angles. …”
