Reaction of Cu(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O with cyclopentyl phosphonic acid and 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) in presence of triethylamine afforded a trinuclear compound [Cu(3)(C(5)H(9)PO(3))(2)(bpy)(3)(MeOH)(H(2)O)](ClO(4))(2) (2). The latter dimerizes to a hexanuclear derivative [Cu(6)(C(5)H(9)PO(3))(4)(bpy)(6)(MeOH)(4)](ClO(4))(4) (1) under prolonged reaction conditions. Reaction of CuCl(2) with cyclopentyl phosphonic acid and 2,2'-bipyridylamine (bpya) affords a tetranuclear derivative [Cu(4)(C(5)H(9)PO(3))(2)(mu-Cl)(2)(bpya)(4)](Cl)(2), (MeOH)(2) (3). Reaction of the latter with NaClO(4) also affords a trinuclear compound [Cu(3)(C(5)H(9)PO(3))(2)(mu-Cl)(bpya)(3)(H(2)O)](ClO(4)) (4). Double and single-bridged hexanuclear species, [{Cu(3)(C(5)H(9)PO(3))(2)(bpy)(3)(bpp)}(MeOH)(2)(H(2)O)(CH(2)Cl(2))(ClO(4))(2)](2) (5), [{Cu(3)(i-PrPO(3))(2)(bpy)(3)(4.4'-bpy)(H(2)O)}(H(2)O)(2)(ClO(4))(2)](2) (6), [{Cu(3)(C(5)H(9)PO(3))(2)(bpya)(3)(4.4'-bpy)(H(2)O)}(MeOH)(H(2)O)(ClO(4))(2)](2) (7), and [Cu(6)(t-BuPO(3))(4)(phen)(6)(4,4'-bpy)(MeOH)(4)](CH(2)Cl(2))(H(2)O)(ClO(4))(4) (8) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) were obtained by the reaction of an in situ generated trinuclear complex with appropriate bridging ligands 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy) or 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (bpp). ESI-MS studies of these complexes reveal that 2-4 retain their structures in solution. Molecular structures of 2-8 were determined by X-ray crystallography. All the compounds reveal a capping coordination mode by tridentate phosphonate [RPO(3)](2-) ligands. Detailed magnetic studies on 2 and 4-8 reveal intramolecular antiferromagnetic interactions between Cu(II) S = 1/2 spins. 2 and 4 are excellent artificial nucleases and can convert supercoiled plasmid DNA (pBR322) into its nicked form without the aid of an external oxidant.

Two new metal organophosphonate oxide m a t e r i a l s w i t h f o r m u l a s [ C u I I 4 C u I 2 ( L ) 2 ( 2 , 2 ′bpy) 6 (HPW 12 O 40 )] n •4nH 2 O (1) and [Cu(2,2′-bpy)VO 2 (OH)-(H 2 L)] n (2) have been synthesized starting from the Cu(II) salts, 2,2′-bipyridine (2,2′-bpy), p-xylylenediphosphonic acid (H 4 L), and sodium tungstate (for 1)/ammonium metavanadate (for 2). Both the compounds 1 and 2 are characterized by routine elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, and unambiguously characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure of compound 1 consists of 2D copper phosphonate layers connected by the Keggin heteropolyanion to form a threedimensional (3D) framework. The copper phosphonate layers in compound 1 are fabricated by the rare copper hexanuclear clusters in which the four terminal Cu(II) centers form two eight-membered Cu-dimer (Cu 2 P 2 O 4 ) rings (top and the bottom) that are connected to each other by the two central Cu(I) atoms of four-membered Cu 2 O 2 rings. These hexanuclear assemblies are connected to each other along the plane through the p-xylyl linkers to form a two-dimensional (2D) layer. Compound 1 is a unique example in terms of the existence of a hexanuclear copper phosphonate cluster in the 3D coordination matrix. Compound 2 has a 2D structure, in which the one-dimensional [Cu(2,2′-bpy)(H 2 L)] n chains are connected by the VO 2 OH subunits to from a 2D layer. The formation of VO 2 OH in compound 2 ceases the formation of eight-membered Cu-dimer rings. The self-assembly of the polyoxometalates plays an important role in the formation of the metal organophosphonate phases.

While metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) or, more generally, coordination polymers (CPs) built using linkers possessing two different functional groups are known very well in the literature, the effect of a third functional group on the physicochemical properties of those materials is weakly recognized. To study this issue we designed an aminocarboxyphosphonic ligand, 3-amino-5-(dihydroxyphosphoryl)benzoic acid (H 3 APB), which is an amino derivative of metaphosphonobenzoic acid. By self-assembly with a copper(II) source, we obtained the three-dimensional CP {[Cu 3 (APB) 2 -(H 2 O) 6 ]•6H 2 O} n , 1, featuring rare binodal 4,5-connected tcs topology. By comparison with previously known representatives of that topology, we put forward a hypothesis that CPs of rare topologies, such as tcs, are obtained when polytopic, differentially substituted ligands are used. The structure of 1 is layered, but not in the manner typical for "traditional" metal phosphonates and carboxyphosphonates, and it was found to be flexible; structural flexibility has been demonstrated by dehydration−hydration experiments. The structural changes were probed with the use of PXRD and IR methods. We have also shown that the copper(II) aminocarboxyphosphonate 1 presented herein has moderate capability for degradation of methylene blue, rhodamine B, and acridine orange in oxidizing conditions; however, the rate of dye degradation is greatly enhanced under visible light irradiation. Analysis of magnetic properties revealed that 1 is a spin-frustrated system with a diamond-chain arrangement of copper(II) ions. The magnetic data were fitted using the isotropic Heisenberg as well as Ising models. Both models consistently indicate that magnetic exchange paths are both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic, with dominating participation of the former interaction.
