New Termite (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae, Rhinotermitidae) Records from Georgia

Abstract: Deliberate surveys and submitted samples have yielded five termite species not previously recorded from Georgia including Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Family Rhinotermitidae), and Calcaritermes nearcticus (Snyder), Cryptotermes brevis (Walker), Incisitermes minor (Hagen), and Kalotermes approximatus Snyder (Family Kalotermitidae) bringing the total number of termite species in Georgia to nine. Coptotermes formosanus, C. brevis, and I. minor are all non-endemic pest species in Georgia. The Georgia records fo… Show more

“…While this termite species is endemic to mainland China (Kistner 1985), their introduction into the Hawaiian archipelago is believed to have been the result of maritime activity originating from the Island of Taiwan (formerly Formosa), with subsequent introductions to continental United States originating from Hawaii (Su and Scheffrahn 1998;Cabrera et al 2000;Hawthorne et al 2000;Howell et al 2000;Scheffrahn et al 2001;Jenkins et al 2002). However, Austin et al 2006 suggests two distinct FST introductions to Hawaii, and then the continental United States, both originating from mainland China.…”

“…These termites are endemic to mainland China (Kistner 1985) and the Island of Taiwan (formerly Formosa; Li et al 2009), and it is believed that their introduction to the Hawaiian archipelago was the result of maritime activity originating from Taiwan, with subsequent introductions to the continental United States originating from Hawaii (Su and Scheffrahn 1998, Cabrera et al 2000, Hawthorne et al 2000, Howell et al 2000, Scheffrahn et al 2001, Jenkins et al 2002, Puckett et al 2012). However, Austin et al (2006) suggested two distinct C. formosanus introductions to Hawaii, and then the continental United States, both originating from mainland China.…”

“…Three additional species were subsequently described from the eastern USA, including Reticulitermes (Termes) virginicus Banks 1907 [ 24 ], R. hageni Banks 1920 [ 10 ] and R. malletei Clément et al 1986 [ 11 ]. Scheffrahn et al (2001) [ 25 ] proposed that R. malletei was a nomen nudum yet Austin et al (2007) [ 12 ] provided 16SrRNA sequence data and morphometrics supporting species status for R. malletei and showed that all nomenclatural requirements for the designation were met . Reticulitermes santonensis Feytaud 1924 [ 26 ] has been synonymized with R. flavipes [ 27 , 28 ].…”
