New tele-diagnostic model using volume sweep imaging for rural areas

Abstract: Advances in information and communications technologies provide a new opportunity to improve the access to healthcare in remote rural areas (RA) where there is a lack of infrastructure and medical experts. This paper implements a new model for tele-ultrasound (US) based on volumetric sweep imaging protocols specially designed for the acquisition of US. Non-physician health personnel from the RA are trained on the use of these protocols in a few days. The operator utilizes the medical box (MB), a specially desi… Show more

“…A simulation of the WiMAX physical layer was performed in [48], with the aim of supporting telemedicine applications in rural areas. In [49], ultrasound imaging was performed in rural areas by trained non-physician personnel, and the results were transferred to a cloud system where the physicians could perform diagnosis in an urban hospital. The approach of [49] requires that the portable ultrasound device be connected to a WiFi router, which necessitates some form of basic internet connectivity in the rural area to send the measurements to the cloud storage.…”

“…El proyecto "Tele-ecografía para zonas rurales" es un modelo innovador desarrollado gracias al trabajo colaborativo entre la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), Medical Innovation and Technology S.A.C. (MI&T) y Medical Imaging Ministries of the Americas (MIMAS); con el objetivo de contribuir en el acceso al diagnóstico por imágenes de un especialista en las zonas con menos recursos (33) .…”

“…The images obtained from operators performing VSI protocols may be sent to a central location for interpretation, removing the need for on-site trained readers and sonographers. [21-23] VSI has been piloted in both Uganda and Peru and has many promising potential applications. In these locations, VSI has been employed for the detection of obstetrics, thyroid, and right upper quadrant pathology.…”
