New Synthesis Routes toward Improvement of Natural Filler/Synthetic Polymer Interfacial Crosslinking

Abstract: Among the critical issues dictating bio-composite performance is the interfacial bonding between the natural fibers and polymer matrix. In this regard, this article presents new synthesis routes comprising the treatment and functionalization of both date palm powder (DPP) filler and a polypropylene (PP) matrix to enhance filler–polymer adhesion in the newly developed bio-composites. Specifically, four bio-composite forms are considered: untreated DPP filled PP (DPP-UT/PP), treated DPP filled PP (DPP-T/PP), tre… Show more

“…The CF outcome is more stable than the CFRP. At around 700 °C, the weight began to drop [ 98 , 99 , 100 , 101 , 102 , 103 , 104 , 105 ]. The PLA was resistant to a continuous transition heat due to lacking of contaminants.…”

“…On the other hand, Figure 6 shows the deconvolution of the C1s levels of all the samples analyzed, which are in accordance with most data of the literature. [ 16,20,34,35 ] Carbon atoms bound only to other carbon atoms (CC) and hydrogen atoms (CH) occur at around 283.6 eV. Carbon bound to an oxygen atom (CO) occurs at approximately 285.0 eV.…”

“…Among the critical issues preventing the market penetration of bio-composites is the interfacial bonding between natural fibers and polymer matrices. In this regard, Alzebdeh et al [ 3 ] described a new synthesis route comprising the treatment and functionalization of both date palm powder (DPP) filler and a polypropylene (PP) matrix to enhance filler–polymer adhesion in newly developed bio-composites. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the successful coupling between the filler and polypropylene matrix after applying the treatment and functionalization schemes.…”
