New synonymies in the bee genus Nomada from North America (Hymenoptera: Apidae)

Abstract: We provide diagnostic morphological characters to help distinguish males and females of the following species of Nomada: N. augustiana Mitchell, N. bethunei Cockerell, N. fervida Smith, N. fragariae Mitchell, N. lehighensis Cockerell, N. texana Cresson, and N. tiftonensis Cockerell. Based on morphological and DNA barcoding evidence we newly synonymize the following species: N. heligbrodtii Cresson (under N. texana), N. indusata Mitchell (under N. augustiana), N. kingstonensis Mitchell (under N. lehighensis), N… Show more

“…DNA barcoding has contributed to the taxonomic study of bees, such as sex associations, discovery of new or cryptic species, and synonymies, etc. (Droege et al, 2010;Gibbs, 2009aGibbs, , 2009bMonckton, 2016;Packer & Ruz, 2017;Sheffield et al, 2009). DNA barcode data for the Japanese…”

“…We compiled a list of bee and county records from a variety of sources including the scientific literature, museum specimens, online image databases (http://bugguide.net-only images readily identifiable by JSA), and our own collections. A preliminary list of species and county records was compiled from published studies, primarily taxonomic revisions (Baker 1975;Bouseman & LaBerge 1979;Broemeling & Moalif 1988;Brooks 1983;Droege et al 2010;Gibbs 2010bGibbs , 2011LaBerge 1961LaBerge , 1973LaBerge , 1977LaBerge , 1980LaBerge , 1987LaBerge , 1989LaBerge , 1956ab;LaBerge & Bouseman 1970;LaBerge & Ribble 1972, McGinley 1986, Milliron 1971, 1973ab, Mitchell 1960b, Mitchell , 1962Onuferko 2017;Ordway 1966a;Ribble 1967; Rightmyer 2008;Rightmyer et al 2010;Stephen 1954;Timberlake 1954Timberlake , 1958Timberlake , 1960Timberlake , 1968Timberlake , 1969Timberlake , 1973Timberlake , 1976. “…The taxonomy and identification of this species requires additional study. The extensive red on the mesoscutum and yellow markings on the mesoscutellum and metasoma are reminiscent of Midwestern N. bethunei Cockerell (Droege et al 2010).…”
