New subscales for the MMPI-2 Social Introversion (Si) scale.

Abstract: The development of three new content-homogeneous subscales for the revised Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2) Social Introversion (Si) scale designed to replace the Serkownek (1975) subscales, which were not included in the revised MMPI, is described. The subscales, termed Shyness/Self-Consciousness, Social Avoidance, and Self/Other Alienation, were developed with data provided by college students (515 men and 797 women). Data analyses with this and the MMPI-2 normative sample demonstrated th… Show more

“…The 31 Harris and Lingoes (1955) and Si (Ben-Porath, Hosteller. Butcher, & Graham, 1989) subscales presented conceptual, methodological, and practical difficulties. As subscales, their elevations are largely driven by the elevations of their parent scales.…”

“…To disentangle multiple scale elevations and better focus test interpretations, code types (two or three most elevated scales in the pro fi le) are frequently generated from the clinical scale pro fi le. The test-user can also consult the Harris-Lingoes and Si subscales to determine which aspect constructs assessed by Clinical scales should be emphasized (Ben-Porath, Hostetler, Butcher, & Graham, 1995 ;Harris & Lingoes, 1995 ). The restructured clinical (RC) Scales (Tellegen et al, 2003 ) were developed to remove a common demoralization factor that saturates the original Clinical Scales, elucidate distinct target constructs from each scale, and thereby improve their convergent and discriminant validity (Tellegen et al, 2003 ) .…”

“…Later research has supported the use of Scale 0 for assessing the individuals' experiences in social situations, especially as it relates to introversion and social maladjustment, (Butcher et al, 2001 ) including anxiety (e.g., Sieber & Meyers, 1992 ;Ward & Perry, 1998 ). Scale 0 has three subscales intended to assist in clarifying clinically signi fi cant elevations, including Si1 (Shyness/ Self-Consciousness), Si2 (Social Avoidance), and Si3 (Alienation-Self and Others; Ben-Porath et al, 1995 ), with the Si1 subscale being most sensitive to social anxiety (cf. Sieber & Meyers, 1992 ) .…”

“…The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI; Hathaway & McKinley, 1943) and its successor, the MMPI-2 (Butcher et al, 2001), have long-standing histories of measuring interpersonal functioning (e.g., Ben-Porath, Hostetler, Butcher, & Graham, 1989;Drake, 1946;Ward & Perry, 1998). However, until recently, the test has lacked a coherent set of scales designed specifically to measure interpersonal tendencies.…”
