New State Record for the Asian Tiger Mosquito, Aedes Albopictus (Skuse)

Abstract: The 1st Aedes albopictus specimen recorded from Colorado was found near a tire storage site in Ft. Lupton on July 9, 2003. Intensified surveillance at the site in 2003 did not result in collection of any other specimens that season, leading to speculation that it was an isolated incident rather than an actual introduction for the species. Control measures against larvae and adult mosquitoes were conducted in the area to further reduce the likelihood of establishment of a viable population. However, subsequent … Show more

“…populations of that species. For example, extreme outliers to the north (e.g., Minnesota) or in the central, intermountain west (e.g., Colorado) for both species are commonly associated with repeated introductions to tire facilities (Reiter 1998, Bennett et al 2005, Neitzel et al 2009. Finally, based on differences in the intensity and spatial coverage of the surveillance effort and the collection methods used, our maps showing collection records of Ae.…”

“…All recorded occurrences of A. albopictus were compiled from the literature (Rossi et al, 1999;Schaffner & Karch, 2000;Chadee et al, 2003;Bennett et al, 2005;Aranda et al, 2006;Klobučar et al, 2006;Benedict et al, 2007;Krueger & Hagen, 2007).
