New species of Proterometra (Digenea: Azygiidae) and its life cycle in the Chickasawhay River, Mississippi, USA, with supplemental observations of Proterometra autraini

Abstract: We describe Proterometra ariasae n. sp. based upon cercariae shed from a freshwater snail, Pleurocera sp., and adults infecting the buccal cavity of longear sunfish, Lepomis megalotis, captured from the Chickasawhay River, Mississippi, USA. We also provide supplemental observations of cercarial and adult paratypes of Proterometra autraini from the Au Train River, Michigan, USA. Sequence data for the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) from adults and cercariae of the new species were identical. Adul… Show more

“…Experimental infections have been performed to elucidate trematode life cycles in South America (Choudhury et al ., 2016), but molecular tools have shown a remarkable capacity for linking life-cycle stages, mainly when the larvae are morphologically distant from the adult forms (Jensen & Bullard, 2010; Locke et al ., 2011; Womble et al ., 2016). Despite several records of metacercariae from freshwater fish in South America (Ostrowski de Núñez & Gil de Pertierra, 2004), few data are available using an integrated morphological and molecular approach, e.g.…”

“…In contrast, the species of Macroderoides Pearse, 1924 infect a small group of divergent hosts (Tkach & Kinsella, 2011). In the Azygiidae, Proterometra Horsfall, 1933 has diversified in Lepomis (sunfishes) (LaBeau & Peters, 1995;Womble et al, 2016), and Leuceruthrus Marshall & Gilbert, 1905 Hoffman, 1999) presents a curious case; members of this large family mainly parasitize birds and mammals and some infections in fish may be incidental (Hoffman, 1999 records four species), but Microphallus ovatus Osborn, 1919 matures in fishes (Hoffman, 1999).…”

“…Many researchers have added to our knowledge of this cosmopolitan species. To date, species of Azygia are frequently reported from the esophagus, stomach, and intestine of a wide range of predatory fishes from Asia, Europe and North America, including China, Japan, India, Russia, Germany, and North America ( Tubangui 1928 ; Tsin 1933 ; Moravec and Sey 1989 ; Marcogliese and Cone 1996 ; Besprozvannykh 2005 ; Jadhav et al 2011 ; Pallewad et al 2015 ; Womble et al 2016 ; Nagasawa and Katahira 2017 ).…”
