New species of Plateremaeoidea (Acari, Oribatida) from Mexico

Abstract: Two new species of plateremaeoid oribatid mites from the genera Jacotella and Plateremaeus, J. alexandrovskiyi n. sp. and P. sedovi n. sp., are described from leaf litter of secondary semi-evergreen tropical forest in Mexico. The description of J. alexandrovskiyi is based on adult and tritonymphal instars, P. sedovi on adult and larval instars. Identification keys to known species of Jacotella and Plateremaeus are provided.

In its traditional, paraphyletic context (sans Astigmata), oribatid mites comprise more than 11,000 known species (Subías 2022). They are largely fungivores and decomposers in organic horizons of soil and have a plesiotypic ontogeny that includes four active, free-living juvenile instars. In a taxonomically organized 2014 catalogue, we summarized literature resources concerning the 805 species for which ontogenetic data (mainly morphological) were available. Herein, we supplement that catalogue with all data known to us that were published during the intervening decade. These relate to 267 species, of which 165 were described prior to 2014. As in the 2014 catalogue, representation is strongest among: the middle-derivative hyporder Nothrina; brachypyline superfamilies that are affiliated with aquatic, semiaquatic or intertidal environments (Limnozetoidea, Ameronothroidea); some eupheredermous groups (Plateremaeoidea, Damaeoidea); and Ceratozetoidea. Also as in 2014, groups that are underreprented, based on their high known diversity, are the ptyctimous Mixonomata (Euphthiracaroidea, Phthiracaroidea) and the brachypyline superfamilies Oppioidea and Oripodoidea.

The Checklist of Oribatida from Mexico includes all known records to date, resulting in 768 species included in 378 genera from 117 families and 43 superfamilies. Records of nine fossil species from Lower Miocene amber (23 Ma) from Chiapas are included. Records are given for 12 of the biogeographic provinces proposed for the country, covering most of the Mexican states (except Sonora, Sinaloa and Tlaxcala), and therefore Mexico ranges among regions with a high species diversity, like Japan (833), India (789), Italy (721), Russian Far East (599), Canada (580) and Brazil (576). Many national and foreign people have contributed to the knowledge about the Mexican Oribatid mite fauna since the early twentieth century.
