New sources of earliness for Finnish faba bean breeding

Abstract: Crop yields in Finland are limited by many factors, such as the short growing season and spring drought. Thus earliness is an important breeding goal in Finnish agriculture, and is especially needed in some crops such as faba bean that have a longer growing period than cereals. During 2009-2011, 400 accessions of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) from 34 countries were evaluated for morpho-physiological traits related to drought resistance and the earliest accessions were identified. The four earliest accessions, from… Show more

“…The contributions of many genes to the flowering pathway in pea have been described (Weller et al ., ), but not yet in faba bean. Germplasm surveys have identified other accessions that are even earlier to flower than Kontu (Khazaei, Stoddard, Lizarazo, & Street, ), although it is not yet known whether these are independent of photoperiod and temperature. Quantitative trait loci for early flowering have been identified in lentil ( Lens culinaris Medik.)…”

“…During the screening for stomatal response, data were gathered on flowering date. Several sources of extremely early flowering were identified (Khazaei et al 2012), and some of them are also earlier to mature than the Finnish cultivar Kontu, which is considered the world's earliest-maturing faba bean cultivar ( Figure 16.2) (Stoddard and Hämäläinen 2011). These have already been used in crossing for both experimental and commercial purposes.…”
