Abstract:Ferroelectric ceramics of strontium bismuth tantalate, SrBi 2 Ta 2 O 9 (SBT), have been synthesized in pure layer-structured perovskite phase by two new soft chemical techniques, namely, a sol-gel process and a coprecipitation method. Ceramics of bismuth titanate, Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 (BIT) and the La-doped series, Bi 4−x La x Ti 3 O 12 (xBLT) with x= 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, and 0.75, have been synthesized by a new sol-gel process based on ethylene glycol. La-doping is found to reduce the temperature of the formation of pure Bi-layer-structured phase from 600°C in BIT and low La-doped xBLT (x=0.1-0.3) to 500°C in high La-doped xBLT (x=0.4-0.75). Increasing the La-content in the xBLT ceramics decreases the contribution of the space charge polarization to the apparent dielectric permittivity. The ceramics of xBLT prepared by this sol-gel route exhibit improved dielectric properties, with a higher room temperature dielectric constant and lower losses up to high temperatures.

Solid solution of multiferroic (1–x)LaCrO3–xBiCrO3 has been synthesized in the perovskite structure via a new sol-gel route using ethylene glycol as solvent. This synthetic process proved to be superior to the solid state reaction method, with a lower formation temperature, improved reactivity, and a higher solubility limit. The complex chemical reactions taking place in the sol and precursor powder upon heating are investigated by simultaneous thermal gravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG–DTA). The substitution of BiCrO3 for LaCrO3 results in a higher density for the ceramics and an increased electric conductivity at high temperatures. The sol-gel synthesized La1−xBixCrO3 solid solution (x = 0.3) exhibits a superparaelectric behaviour with a slim and nonlinear polarization – electric field hysteresis loop, whereas a double hysteresis loop of antiferroelectric appearance is displayed in the compound with x = 0.4.
