New SERS feature of β‐carotene: consequences for quantitative SERS analysis

Abstract: While recording SERS spectra of pure β‐carotene at sub‐micromole concentrations for reference purpose, we discovered an unusual spectral response never reported before. In pre‐resonance conditions with the 532‐nm line, SERS of β‐carotene with AgNPs exhibits among the strong υ(CC) mode at 1512 cm−1 unshifted from normal Raman spectrum, additional strong bands at 1649, 1575 and 1387 cm−1 as well as other medium bands not observed in the Raman spectrum of the crystalline powder. Such behavior is explained in ter… Show more

“…The profiles were placed manually and intuitively to serve as the initial parameters for curve fitting. The deconvoluted spectra contain variations in peak positions, which were then calibrated using the peak position of the pure β-carotene 43 as a reference marker.…”

“…The peak at 1,006 cm –1 occurs due to methyl in‐plane rocking modes. The high‐intensity peaks at 1,157 and 1,520 cm –1 were attributed to the in‐phase symmetric stretching of C–C and C=C of the carotenoid polyene chain, respectively (Cintă Pinzaru et al., 2015; Huo et al., 2011; Killeen et al., 2013).…”

“…Multiple carotenoid species may contribute to the band profile. The v2 band at 1157 cm -1 arises from single C-C bonds in the polyene chain, while the v3 band, which is mainly caused by methyl rocking, was clearly split into two peaks at 1000 and 1013 cm -1 (Tschirner et al, 2009;Cintă Pinzaru et al, 2015).…”
