New Secrets of Spider Silk: Exceptionally High Thermal Conductivity and Its Abnormal Change under Stretching

Abstract: Two new significant discoveries are reported: i) the dragline silk of N. clavipes spider has an exceptionally high thermal conductivity: up to 416 W/m·K that beats most materials; ii) contrary to normal materials, its thermal conductivity increases with strain (19% increase under ∼20% strain). These new findings will revolutionize the design of polymer fibers to increase their thermal conductivity by orders of magnitude.

“…Thus cocoon membrane has an intrinsic temperature controlling system to offer a physiological temperature regime inside the cocoon. A thermoregulatory mechanism in hornet silk, hornet's nest, and in the cocoon of Bombyx mori was proposed earlier [9,20,21,28]. Our results are supporting the earlier finding.…”

“…Literature remain almost silent on the issue of such directional gaseous flow across the cocoon membrane [19]. Though temperature regulation studies have been attempted [9,20,21]. Therefore it is of great interest to understand this important feature of cocoon which impart a conducive environment for the survival of the pupa.…”

“…Another recent discovery is that an individual micrometer-size spider silk fiber has an exceptionally high thermal conductivity up to 416 W/mK due to the highly oriented polymer chains in silk fibers. 7 Both the chain length and monomer type of polymer chains could affect the thermal conductivity.…”

“…One example is the conflicting recent works suggesting that N. clavipes dragline silk may 139 or may not 140 possess a remarkably high thermal conductivity, on par with copper. Atomistic simulations suggest that, in particular, the b-sheets have an unexpectedly high thermal conductivity related to their inter-strand hydrogen bonding.…”
