The Middle Jurassic Shaximiao Formation encompasses tens of meters of thick lowstand meandering valley (LMV) strata in the western Sichuan foreland basin. Ancient LMVs newly discovered in this area were further studied based on sequence stratigraphy and seismic sedimentology. The aim of the present study was to investigate the sedimentary characteristics, sequence architecture, and the controls on LMV deposition in this tectonically active basin using field survey data, seismic sections, seismic amplitude imaging, core description, and comprehensive application of drilling data. The results show the following: (1) Three regional sequence boundaries and two flooding surfaces were recognized, and the Shaximiao Formation was divided into two-third-order sequences and four systems tracts. (2) Three sedimentary facies associations were identified: incised valley-fill, tributary channel, and overbank facies. Incised valleys are 5-17 km wide, 20-60 m deep and traceable for 120 km along their axes. (3) In the downstream segment, the role of tectonism gradually diminishes, and periodic base-level changes control the form and evolution of the incised valleys. Three types of LMVs-A1, A2, and A3-developed with changes in base level (lake level); of these types, the base level of the A3 LMV was likely the lowest.

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis has revealed extremely high abundances of rearranged hopanes in Jurassic source rocks and related crude oils in the center of the Sichuan Basin. The detected rearranged hopanes include 17α(H)-diahopanes (C 27 D and C 29−35 D), early-eluting rearranged hopanes (C 27 E and C 29−33 E), and 18α(H)-neohopanes (C 29 Ts and Ts). Both the 17α(H)-diahopanes and the early-eluting rearranged hopanes exhibit a distribution pattern similar to that of the 17α(H)-hopane series, with a predominance of the C 30 member and the presence of 22S and 22R epimers of hopanes in the extended series (>C 30 ). The results of this study show that the relatively high abundance of rearranged hopanes in Jurassic source rocks in the study area is associated with their depositional environments and with clay-mediated acidic catalysis rather than, as was previously thought, thermal maturity. Shallow lacustrine facies with brackish water and a suboxic to weak reducing sedimentary environment have contributed to the enrichment of rearranged hopanes, and clay-mediated acidic catalysis may also have had a positive influence on their abundance. The distribution patterns of the diahopane series indicate that the oils from Jurassic reservoirs in the Gongshanmiao Oilfield are sourced from Jurassic source rocks. Rearranged hopanes are therefore considered to be effective biomarkers for oil-source correlation in the center of the Sichuan Basin.

Based on core observation, cast and fluorescent thin sections, FESEM and ESEM, coquina in Da'anzhai Member of Jurassic in Sichuan Basin were examined systematically. Together with production data and logging evaluation, a method for lacustrine coquina evaluation based on geological theory was established up. In the article, two aspects of the study were elaborated, characteristics of favorable reservoirs, and a "five-step" evaluation method for favorable coquina reservoir. According to the correlation between porosity and production data, porosity is not effective in finding high quality coquina reservoir of this area. Whereas micro research of reservoir samples from a high productivity well revealed that sparry coquina is the best lithofacies, with the most developed micro storage space of various kinds. After the favorable reservoir was sorted out, a five-step method evaluating the coquina reservoir was worked out. Correlation of GR value and rock types suggests that GR<30 API is an effective evaluation parameter in identifying profitable reservoir lithofacies. Meanwhile, the combination of profitable reservoir rock thickness and production data revealed that the reservoirs with the highest potentiality are those with thickness of 3-18 m. Fractures are more developed in faults, folds and structural noses in the study area. Organic acid is discharged massively before the peak of hydrocarbon generation, leading to the formation of dissolution pores in the reservoir. The evaluation of organic acid was made by using the source rock indexes. After evaluating the four factors, and compiling their distribution maps, the maps were overlapped to predict favorable reservoir zones, and 7 first class and 9 second class favorable zones of coquina were picked out.
