New records of the genus Gambierdiscus in marginal seas of the Indian Ocean

Abstract: The occurrence of the dinoflagellates belonging to the ciguatera-related genus Gambierdiscus is reported for the first time from the north-western Arabian Gulf and northern Red Sea in the Indian Ocean basin. Gambierdiscus yasumotoi was recorded from two sampling sites on the southern Kuwait coast, and co-occurrence of G. cf. belizeanus and G. yasumotoi was found also in the Gulf of Aqaba in Jordan. The morphology of cells is described on the basis of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy examinatio… Show more

“…Several specimens of Gambierdiscus yasumotoi with aberrant plate pattern have been observed among cultured cells (Saburova et al, 2013) and cells with substantial plate overlaps were found in this study (Fig. 5g), which would tend to distort the plate size or shape.…”

“…However in overall cell size, these specimens more closely resembled G. yasumotoi (Rhodes et al, 2014a, Table 1). In the material from Kuwait (Saburova et al, 2013), the D:W ratio and epitheca:hypotheca ratio appeared to be most similar to those of G. ruetzleri, while the cell width and overall cell size were most similar to those of G. yasumotoi.…”

“…Also recently, F. yasumotoi has been reported from the northern Red Sea (Jordan) and Persian Gulf (Kuwait) (Saburova et al. ). The presence of “globular Gambierdiscus ” cells was mentioned for the eastern Mediterranean Sea (Parsons et al.…”

“…Very recently, benthic dinoflagellate assemblages have been described for the first time with emphasis on ciguatera‐related species for the central Red Sea off the Saudi Arabia coast (Catania ), and from the northern Red Sea (Saburova et al. ); however, there is considerable diversity yet to be described in sand‐dwelling dinoflagellates of this region.…”
