New records of Termite species from Kerala (Isoptera: Termitidae)

A checklist of termites (Blattodea: Isoptera) of southern India with their distribution is presented in this paper. In total, 132 species from five families are listed, of which Termitidae Latreille, 1802 is the dominant family comprising 101 species from 27 genera and four subfamilies. The recent additions of species to the regional termite diversity are Krishnacapritermes dineshan Amina & Rajmohana, 2020, K. manikandan Amina & Rajmohana, 2020, and Pseudocapritermes kunjepu Mathew, 2020. Out of 132 species recorded from southern India, 60 species and five genera are endemic to the region, and the subfamily Termitinae Latreille, 1802 accounts for maximum endemism.

Termites, an important group of insects, present almost everywhere and play a vital role in the modification of their surrounding environment. This taxonomic account is a part of our study on the termite fauna of Meghalaya and deals with two new records of nasutiform termite from the state. The studied samples were identified as Hospitalitermes jepsoni Snyder, 1934 and Nasutitermes matangensis matangensis Haviland, 1898 based on the available morphological keys. The genus Hospitalitermes Holmgren, 1912 is also documented for the first time from the state. A new species of Pericapritermes, P. travancorensis sp. nov. (Isoptera, Termitidae, Termitinae), is described from Kerala, India, based on the characters of the king, queen, imago, soldiers, and workers. Morphological measurements of the king, queen, imago, soldiers, and workers are given with suitable illustrations. List of species of the genus Pericapritermes from the Oriental region is provided.
