New records of Phibalura flavirostris Vieillot, 1816 (Aves: Cotingidae) in Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, with notes on its natural history and a review of its historical occurrence

Abstract: We present new records of Phibalura flavirostris for the state of Minas Gerais, a little known and endangered species in the state, including notes on feeding and breeding behavior. We also present a review of records of the species in this state based on specimens housed in ornithological collections. It was noted the consumption of fruits belonging to five different plant families and reproductive evidence in a new state locality. The species proved to be rare in Minas Gerais, being relatively common in a fe… Show more

“…The status of P. flavirostris in Mato Grosso do Sul is still uncertain given the scant information on this species. Therefore, aspects such as migration, breeding season, and behavioral characteristics require further studies, considering its uncertain conservation status (Peixoto et al 2013). The only record of P. flavirostris in Mato Grosso do Sul was in a large forest fragment in Novo Horizonte do Sul in May 2011 (Della-Flora 2011).…”

“…The nominate subspecies occurs in the Atlantic Forest of south-east and south Brazil, eastern Paraguay (no recent records) and north-east Argentina (Misiones); P. f. boliviana, however, is known only from the Andes in a tiny area of western Bolivia (del Hoyo et al 2020). Whereas the latter is resident, P. f. flavirostris is often considered partially migratory, albeit its movements are poorly known (Snow 1982, Sick 1997, Bodrati & Cockle 2006, Kirwan 2008, Kirwan & Green 2011, Peixoto et al 2013, del Hoyo et al 2020). Records in central Brazil are particularly few and its status there virtually unknown, although it is often assumed to be a rare migrant (Kirwan 2008, Kirwan & Green 2011, del Hoyo et al 2020).…”
