New records of invasive Parakeet hybrids in Spain. A great opportunity to apply the rapid response mechanism

Abstract: Prevention, early warning and rapid response are the most effective measures in preventing the impacts of invasive species. The Rose-ringed Parakeet Psittacula krameri, is an invasive species widely spread across Europe, including Spain. The Alexandrine Parakeet Psittacula eupatria is also an invasive species established in Europe, but not in Spain, although a species distribution model classified parts of Spain as 'highly suitable' and an invasion risk assessment predicted a 'high risk of invasion' in Europe.… Show more

“…2009). Hybridization among congeneric introduced parrot species has frequently been reported in the USA and Europe (Mabb 1997, Krause 2004, Toft & Wright 2015, Postigo 2016, Martens & Woog 2017, Mori et al . 2017).…”

“…Thus, during the first two phases ringnecked parakeets could still get reproduced, and the total number of captured birds (n = 107) was higher than the initial counted population (n = 70). For this reason and taking into account the high reproductive success of the species, permitting rapid natural increase and spread of their populations (Strubbe and Matthysen 2009), any control or eradication project must be carried as soon as possible (Genovesi et al 2015;Postigo 2016).…”

“…For example, the mallard duck affects the genetic pool of endangered species such as Hawaiian duck Anas wyvilliana, the African black duck A. sparsa, and the Meller's duck A. meller (Fowler et al 2009). Some of the species assessed in the present study, such as the rose-ringed parakeet, are bred in captivity, and the wild populations of hybrids for this species are relatively rare or have few populations (Postigo 2016).…”
