Parthenogenetic reproduction has only previously been demonstrated in two species of agromyzid leafminer flies (Diptera: Agromyzidae), both from the genus Phytomyza. The plantain leafminer, Phytomyza plantaginis, is Palaearctic in origin, and bisexual populations have been observed in this region. However, historically, only females had been collected in the Australasian, Nearctic, Neotropical and Oceanian regions. Here, we show that southern Australian samples of this species from Plantago spp. can be composed of both parthenogenic and bisexual populations. In sites around Melbourne, males were present, although the sex ratio was female biased, with females comprising 75% of sampled individuals. In contrast, males were absent from collections in western and northern Victoria, Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales and Western Australia. Female P. plantaginis flies were reared from three Plantago host plants (Plantago lanceolata, Plantago major and Plantago coronopus), although females were particularly common from Pl. lanceolata. Insect cages set up with leafminers from sites where only females occurred produced only females, while cages with leafminers from sites where males occurred produced both sexes and mating was observed. Individuals from all populations were infected by Wolbachia endosymbionts, suggesting that the presence/absence of Wolbachia is not directly responsible for the parthenogenesis. However, there was an association between a mtDNA variant (PP.02) and sexual reproduction, in that this variant was absent in areas where only females were collected but present in all males and some females from areas with sexual populations. The mechanism responsible for parthenogenesis in P. plantaginis remains unknown but is linked to maternal factors.

The fossil record of the Azores still lacks evidence of terrestrial invertebrates. Based on a study of the collections of Quaternary fossil plant imprints from the Azores, located in the depositories of public collections and also newly conducted field research, several samples of fossil leaves with traces of plant-animal interactions were found. These are evidence of marginal feeding (Phagophytichnus ekowskii) and anophionome mine (Cuniculonomus isp.). One specimen with traces of boring in fossil wood (Xylonichnus trypetus), previously only briefly mentioned in the literature, was also described in detail. In addition to a detailed description of the found traces, the present study also discusses the possible trace-makers, using a comparison with the recent phytophagous fauna in relation to the original vegetation of the Azores (that includes laurisilva forest). It is thus possible to consider butterfly caterpillars (group Macrolepidoptera) or locust larvae (Orthoptera/Caelifera) as possible originators of marginal feeding. The ophionome mine could have been caused by the larvae of leaf-miner flies (Agromyzidae) or moths from the group Microlepidoptera (Gracillariidae). Wood-destroying beetles could be the cause of the boring in fossil wood.

Survey of Insects Associated with some Species of Cucurbitaceae in Iraq

Due to the spread of insect pests that destroys the crops belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family and led to deterioration in crop productivity in Iraq due to various reasons, the most important of which is Climate fluctuation and extreme weather events have a major impact on this problem. So, this paper was proposed to identify those species pests and prevalence. Insects were collected during the period from March 1. 2022 to October 30, 2022 from the several regions of Iraq, including: Baghdad, Babylon, Basra, Karbala, Wasit, Diyala, Saladin, and Duhok Provinces. The results showed 19 important species under 17 genera with 13 families, and five orders. The most common synonyms and distribution of species, as well as the plant hosts were provided; and the scientific names have been corrected according to the recent references. The date and localities of the specimens’ collection were presented. In conclusion, the species of Dacus frontalis Beecker, 1922 and D. ciliates Loew, 1862 were the most abundant pests in studied regions, especially Diyala, Wasit, and Baghdad Provinces. In contrast to Carpomya pardalina (Bigot, 1891), which was the least prevalent among the recorded species.
