New Records for Coahuila from a Riparian Bird Community in Northern Mexico

Unusual Bird Reports from the Trans-Pecos District of Chihuahua, Mexico, Including Five New Additions to the State of Chihuahua

“…Two adults were observed and photographed at Vado de Meoqui on 24 February 2019 (J. Robles; eBird, https://ebird.org/averaves/checklist/ S53180385). Although it had not been historically recorded in Sonora (Russell and Monson 1998), there are now several records in that state (municipality of Puerto Peñasco; Villaseñor-Gómez et al 2010). These records suggest an ongoing expansion of the species' winter range in inland Mexico (Gómez de Silva 2003b, 2004a, 2005b, Gómez de Silva et al 2010.…”

“…The species has been reported more regularly in August-November at wetlands or rivers in central (e.g., Presa Chuviscar, municipality of Chihuahua, M. Jurado; eBird, https://ebird.org/averaves/checklist/S38801661) and south eastern (Moreno-Contreras et al 2016) Chihuahua since 2015. There are a few inland records in Coahuila, Durango (Gómez de Silva 2003b, 2004a, 2006, 2007a, Ruvalcaba-Ortega and González-Rojas 2009, and Nuevo León (Gómez de Silva 2007b). In western Texas, this species occurs almost annually during all seasons at water reservoirs Zimmer 1998, Lockwood andFreeman 2014), and it is a rare but nearly regular warm-season visitor from mid-April to mid-September in the southern half of New Mexico (Williams 2022).…”

“…Howell and Webb (1995) considered the White-tailed Hawk a fairly common to uncommon resident on the Pacific Slope, though with a patchy, discontinuous distribution from Sonora to Nayarit and points south. However, Russell and Monson (1998) considered its occurrence in Sonora to be speculative. The species' status has remained uncertain in Chihuahua for decades: there is only a historical sight record at Cañón de Santa Elena (also called "Santa Elena Canyon") on 15 April 1967 (Wauer 1996).…”

“…An adult bird observed at Laguna de Bustillos on 18 March 2018 (FM-F, R. Barrera, and L. Contreras; Supplementary Material 1c) is the first record for Chihuahua (Howell and Webb 1995). This species is an uncommon fall migrant and a fairly common winter visitor and spring migrant in Sonora (Russell and Monson 1998). It is a rare winter visitor to El Paso and Hudspeth counties, Texas Zimmer 1998, Lockwood andFreeman 2014).…”
