New record of abelisauroid theropods from the Bauru Group (Upper Cretaceous), São Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract: -Isolated bones of abelisauroid theropods from the Bauru Group (Late Cretaceous, Brazil), are described. They correspond to three individuals represented by fused ischia and part of the ilium, a partial axis, and a right fi bula, respectively. The fossils come from different sites in the municipalities of Ibirá (axis and fi bula) and Monte Alto (ilium and ischia), São Paulo State, from Maastrichtian beds of the São José do Rio Preto and the Marília formations (Bauru Group), respectively. The specimens provide … Show more

“…Thin and laterally restricted sandy‐mudstone layers occur as lenses among sandstone layers and represent less than 2% of the total succession of the basin fill (Basilici, Dal' Bo, & Oliveira, 2016). The palaeontological content of the Marília Formation is dominated by fossils of theropod (abelisauroids) and sauropod (titanosaurs) dinosaurs, crocodyliforms, and ichnofossils (e.g., Bertini, Santucci, & Arruda‐Campos, 2001; Iori & Arruda‐Campos, 2016; Méndez, Novas, & Iori, 2014; Mineiro, Santucci, Da Rocha, De Andrade, & Nava, 2017; Santucci, 2013).…”

“…A slightly smaller abelisaurid, represented by a beautifully preserved right tibia, was announced by Machado et al (2013b). Most recently, Méndez et al (2014) described additional abelisaurid postcranial material (a partial axis, partial pelvis, and fibula) from the Marília Formation and the São José do Rio Preto Formation, another putative Maastrichtian unit that crops out nearby in São Paulo State, but whose stratigraphic relationships to the Marília Formation are still somewhat unclear.…”
