IntroduçãoO mercado internacional da própolis brasileira tem surgido como uma boa alternativa para fonte de renda aos apicultores, principalmente no que se refere aos estados produtores de própolis verde e vermelha. No estado do Rio Grande do Norte (RN), nordeste do Brasil, esse produto apícola tem sido pouco explorado quanto as suas propriedades terapêuticas, composição química e origem botânica.Entre os biomas do RN, o mais abrangente é o de caatinga, clima semiárido. Nesse bioma foi descoberto um tipo de própolis verde diferente daquele produzido na região sudeste do país.Verificou-se que esse tipo de própolis é produzido tanto por abelhas Apis mellifera L. (africanizada) como por uma espécie de abelha nativa Scaptotrigona postica (abelha sem ferrão) (FERREIRA et al., 2017a(FERREIRA et al., , 2017b.Diante do exposto, objetivou-se caracterizar esse tipo de própolis proveniente da região semiárida do país, avaliar sua composição química e atividade biológica.
Fundamentação TeóricaA própolis é um produto das abelhas. Possui composição complexa e variada. No ninho, a principal função da própolis é combater doenças transmitidas por parasitas das abelhas, principalmente nas regiões de crias (SALATINO et al., 2011). A cera de abelha e as resinas vegetais são os principais constituintes da própolis, mas também podem ser encontrados outros
