New Product Development in the Fashion Industry: An Empirical Investigation of Italian Firms

Abstract: This paper investigates how companies in the fashion industry organize, plan and perform their New Product Development process (NPD). The results have been achieved through an empirical study carried out by the authors with the support of the GeCo Observatory, an Italian research initiative launched in 2012. This paper shows the details of eight selected case studies from the Italian fashion industry

“…The complexity notion, related to the system notion, is usually defined as a large number of elements forming a system, a strong coupling or dependency between these elements and uncertainty about how well the complex system will function [24,53,54]. The coupling between elements distinguishes two types of product portfolio complexity: product complexity (precise coupling of components into a single product and related functional uncertainty [53]) and range complexity (coupling of components from different products [55]). The first type can be controlled by designing a modular architecture of the product in the early design phases.…”

“…This aspect is particularly relevant, referring to the new product development (NPD) that is a dynamic process characterised by a high seasonal demand, due to the seasonal nature of fashion products (Bandinelli, Rinaldi, Rossi, & Terzi, 2013). In fact in this scenario, product development cycles are frequently updated, the degree of outsourcing is substantial and the use of innovation intermediaries is persuasive (Tran, Hsuan, & Mahnke, 2011).…”

“…In the fashion industry, the development of products is a dynamic process characterized by a high seasonal demand, which depends on the seasonal nature of fashion products. The entire process runs at least two times per year, one time for each season and with short time-to-market (Bandinelli et al, 2013). Furthermore, the traditional seasons are less and less visible than they were before, with frequent changes in season, such as color, shape, texture, label, etc.…”

“…The effective management of the apparel industry depends on anticipating consumer needs and desires who need to respond with innovation, with products well designed and executed properly (May-Plumlee, & Little, 2006). In addition, the product development process contributes to maintaining the profitability and flexibility of textile and clothing companies (Bandinelli, Rinaldi, Rossi, & Terzi, 2013;Senanayake & Little, 2010).…”
