New phase shifters and phased antenna array designs based on ferroelectric materials and CTS technologies

Abstract: As the search continues for low-cost and highperformance components for the front-end devices for wireless communications systems, focus has been on the use of MEMS technology; but some attention has recently been given to exploring new and innovative designs based on the Ferroelectric and the Continuous Transverse Stubs (CTS) technologies. In this paper we present new phase shifter designs and an integrated phased array antenna system based on the use of multilayer Ferroelectric materials. Simulation results … Show more

“…Recently, high-permittivity materials, (Bs, Sr)TiO 3 (BST), have been attracting attention as key material for tunable devices such as phase shifters, filters, and capacitors in microwave equipment [1]. An evaluation of material characteristics of BST thin film has been reported [2], but an accurate evaluation method of dielectric characteristics of BST ceramic substrates in the microwave region has not yet been reported.…”

“…It was, however, generally felt that phaseshifter designs based on this technology, although low cost, still exhibited unacceptably high insertion losses and impractical low input impedance values. Even with the implementation of the multi-dielectric layers designs in a microstrip transmission line arrangement [1], the resulting input impedance of microstrip and parallel plate type structures were unacceptably low.…”
