New perspective? Comparing frame occurrence in online and traditional news media reporting on Europe’s “Migration Crisis”

Abstract: News media have transformed over the last decades, there being increasing numbers of online news suppliers and an increase in online news consumption. We examine how reporting on immigration differs between popular German online and print media over three crucial years of the so-called immigration crisis from 2015 to 2017. “…However, the Netherlands, similar to most other European countries, experienced record numbers of migrants and asylum seekers during 2015/16 (Tolsma et al, 2021). This is mirrored by the frequency of related media articles published in print media, which were highest in 2015 and 2016 (Czymara & Klingeren, 2021). “…There has been an increase in the use of text data to study the agenda-setting and framing capacities of different actors in the public discourse, with a strong emphasis on elite actors such as the media and political parties (Helbling 2014;Eberl and Galyga 2021;Greussing and Boomgaarden 2017;Bleich and Veen 2021;Heidenreich et al 2019;Czymara and Klingeren 2022;Card et al 2022;Webson et al 2020). The combined findings of this literature clearly show that immigration has become a salient topic in the European media (Strömbäck et al 2021) and that coverage of immigration is often negative and conflict-centered (Eberl et al 2018).…”

“…While critical linguistics may be largely qualitative in nature, it is now common to combine a CDA approach with corpus linguistics methodology (see Hodson & Lefevre, 2022 for a general discussion of this). For studies of media discourses of migration, scholars examine the frequency of terms and collocations to identify discourses and frames (e.g., Czymara & van Klingeren, 2022; Giorgi & Vitale, 2017; Mendelsohn et al., 2021; Rheindorf & Vollmer, 2023; Schoor & Viola, 2023; Tort et al., 2016; Yantseva, 2020).…”
