New Penta(tetrathiafulvalenyl)[60]fullerenes for Supramolecular Materials

Abstract: New penta(organo)fullerenes donor-acceptor systems bearing five tetrathiafulvalene recognition units have been synthesized to promote self-assemblies similar in appearance to shuttlecocks nested into each other thanks to the conical host cavity created around the fullerene together with the π-π and electronic interactions.

“…We recently described donor–acceptor supramolecular polymers based on penta(organo)[60]fullerenes prepared by introducing five donor tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) fragments as electroactive recognition units leading to a host cavity complementary to the fullerene C 60 acceptor . In this full research paper, we demonstrate the influence of the donor unit on the self‐assembly of these materials through supramolecular nesting organization.…”

“…The conical structure obtained by regioselective pentafunctionalization of C 60 offers remarkable self-assembly capabilities. [19][20][21][22][23][24] Recently, we reported the syntheses of penta(organo)[60]fullerenes using ve tetrathiafulvalene 25 (TTF) or (Zn)porphyrin 26 fragments as electroactive recognition units which led, thanks to p-p and electronic interactions, to supramolecular arrangements similar to shuttlecocks nested into each other. With the aim of developing new supramolecular assembly based on penta(organo)[60]fullerenes, we were interested in the use of the self-aggregative BPTI motifs to assemble fullerene derivatives.…”
