New pathogenic insights into rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: The findings discussed in this review underscore the progress made to date and the need for future studies, investigating disease mechanisms in RA, with particular interest in at-risk RA gene loci, their function in immune and stromal cells within the synovium, and how they interact with environmental factors to initiate and perpetuate disease.

“…Herein we have focused on Helios and Helios-related phenotypes in the context of tissue T reg from rheumatic joints of patients with RA and SpA. These two diseases have overlapping manifestations and similar treatment strategies, but also display different underlying aetiologies [42,43]. Hereby, the commonalities we find are likely to be driven by the local inflammatory environment, and not by the initiating factors for disease occurrence.…”

“…Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an auto-immune disease with unresolved aetiology which predominantly occurs in females (Jutley et al 2015). Glucocorticoids (GCs) have been prescribed for the treatment of RA for decades, and are considered to be effective drugs in reducing inflammation and preventing joint destruction (Hoes et al 2007).…”
