New paradigm research in practice: the trials and tribulations of action research

Abstract: This methodological paper reflects on the way in which nursing research has developed along similar lines to research in education. It focuses on the emergence of action research as an example of collaborative research within the practice discipline of nursing. Action research is placed in the framework of new paradigm research and questions concerning its scientific merit are addressed along with its idealistic value to nursing. “…To advocates of AR its greatest appeal is probably its focus on change, a feature that is pivotal in bridging the theory/practice gap (Meyer, 1993;Waterman, et al, 1995). The distinctions between organisational change/practice development and patient care/practitioner development are not always clear, but our assessment indicates that the focus of change in the reviewed papers primarily was organisational/practice development.…”

“…This qualitative, descriptive study is a part of larger research project using an action research (AR) approach (Bondas, 2003;Meyer, 1993;Stringer & Genat, 2004) focusing on meal distribution to elderly persons (≥65 years) living at home.…”

“…This could be overcome by the development of a 'relationship that is equal and based on openness and honesty' (Webb, 1989, p. 408). The use of two-way communication with continual feedback to and from participants should help to overcome questions of lack of informed consent in relation to unknown outcomes (Meyer, 1993). Hunt (1987) also points out the dangers of ignoring the interests of the 'supplicants' (in this case, patients) at the expense of the 'expert's' (in this case, nurses) drive for increased professional standing.…”
