New Orleans Tourism and Crime: A Case Study

Abstract: As a major tourism destination, New Orleans has been under scrutiny because of its very high crime rate. Negative perceptions from potential tourists and meeting planners are threatening the well-being of a strong tourism sector. This article examines the crime and tourism situations and shows how various stakeholders have responded to the problem. An apparent lack of industry concern and cooperation is seen as the major drawback in tourism’s bout with crime and the resulting negative publicity.

“…The first is the "sustainability of health", which deals with the physical health risk the tourist accepts when deciding on a destination [82][83][84]. The second variable is security in terms of delinquency [85][86][87][88][89], and the third is the risk of war, politic instability, or legal security, measured by the variable "sustainability of belonging to Europe". Finally, there are variables related to the governance of the destination by the different public administrations and its strategic planning [12,13,36,37,90].…”

The concern of turning into a casualty of crime impacts the enthusiasm to visit as well as damages the expansion of local tourism business.…”
