“…10 However, little is known about the long-term risk of ischemic stroke in patients with perioperative AF. A few single- or dual-center studies have reported an increased long-term risk of stroke in patients with perioperative AF after cardiac surgery, 1113 whereas other single-center analyses have found no such association in this population. 14,15 Moreover, data are scarce in regard to the long-term risk of stroke from perioperative AF in patients undergoing other types of surgery.…”

“…2 POAF is associated with increased morbidity in the immediate postoperative period such as stroke, intra-aortic balloon pump use, infections, respiratory failure, renal failure and prolonged length of hospital stay. 3,4 Long-term survival analyses have demonstrated an increased mortality in CABG 5,6 and aortic valve replacement 7 patients who developed POAF. 8 In a study involving 16,169 CABG patients registered in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database, a 25% mortality increase was found in patients who had POAF versus those who did not, after a mean follow-up period of six years.…”

“…The negative effect of long term AF has been extensively studied in the previous research [2,16,17]. The incidence of AF in postcardiotomy patients may also depend on the type of surgery.…”
