New Nonlinear Optical Materials: Metal Oxides with Nonbonded Electrons

Abstract: Molecules or ions of the form BOx−n lack a center of symmetry whenever the B atom has a nonbonded pair of electrons. The problem of generating an acentric crystal can be approached by using these acentric oxygen polyhedrons as building blocks. A very high incidence of acentricity is found in compounds based on distorted BO3−n octahedra, such as XeO3, AIO3 (A=H, Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, NH4, and Tl), and MTeO3 (M=Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn, Cd, Hg, Pb, Ni). Since these materials also have large indices of refraction, the concept… Show more

“…This indicates Laue group 3m with possible space groups R32, R3m or R3m satisfying the lack of systematic absences. Of these, only R3m allows a satisfactory placing of one iodate group within the unit cell, while R32 is also inconsistent with the observed piezoelectric effect (Bergman, Boyd & Ashkin, 1966). R3rn was therefore chosen as the space group; this was finally confirmed by the successful refinement.…”

“…KIO 3 is a phase matchable crystal and shows signifi- cant non-linear optical effects [42,43]. Due to the low symmetry, crystal growth and the characterization of physical properties are difficult.…”

“…) have been extensively studied because of their promising nonlinear optical properties (Bergman, Boyd & Ashkin, 1969). Contrary to tellurites with small metal ions (Hanke, 1967;Kohn, Inoue, Horie & Akimoto, 1976) or large ones like Sr 2+, Ba 2+, Pb 2+ (Burckhardt, Koqak, K/ilcii & Tr6mel, 1984;Folger, 1975;Young, 1979), there is a lack of knowledge concerning the structure of tellurites with medium-sized ions like Cd 2+ (Hanke, 1983).…”
