New multiplexed all solid state pulser for high power wide aperture kinetically enhanced copper vapor laser

Abstract: A novel multiplexed scheme is demonstrated to combine two or more pulsed solid state pulsers of moderate capabilities. Pulse power supply comprising of two solid state pulsers of ~6 kW rating each in multiplexed mode with common magnetic pulse compression stage was demonstrated and optimized for operating with a wide aperture kinetically enhanced copper vapor laser. Using this new configuration, the multiplexed pulsed power supply was capable of operating efficiently at net repetition-rate of ~13 kHz, 12 kW (w… Show more

“…Subsequently, the auxiliary IGBT T3 is switched on to make sure that the residual voltage on C ′ is zero, thereby reducing jitter [13]. This circuit is also referred to as an all solid-state pulse forming circuit and can be operated at a fixed frequency for which it is designed [14]. The PRF of the laser is 9 kHz and delivers an optical power of ~40 W in a 1 + 1 MOPA (master oscillator and power amplifier) configuration at a laser head pressure of 40 mbar and buffer gas flow rate of 2 mbar.…”

“…The copper vapor laser (CVL) is a visible laser source with high average power, requiring pulse voltage for its excitation [1]. The pulse-generating unit (PGU) delivers the required pulse voltage excitation, which serves two purposes [1,2]: the first is to create population inversion and the other is to impart the necessary thermal energy to obtain the required operating temperature for copper vapor generation. The PGU is designed to deliver an excitation voltage of ∼13 kV with a rise time of less than 100 ns [2].…”

The PGU is designed to deliver an excitation voltage of ∼13 kV with a rise time of less than 100 ns [2]. This complex excitation pulse requirement makes it difficult to efficiently transfer the electrical energy into the plasma, generated inside the laser head.…”

“…SMPGs belong to the class of converting technology devices that serve to amplify the peak power of the pulse on the load [3,4]. They are widely used in a number of electric discharge technologies, where it is necessary to have powerful current pulses of submicrosecond duration with a sharp leading edge, for example, for powering microwave devices or pumping gas lasers on metal vapors [5,6]. In recent years, the relevance of using these devices has increased significantly with the need for air purification from sulfur dioxide [7,8] and wastewater disinfection [9,10].…”
