Out of many renewable sources, solar energy sources that are clean, green, and emission-free have gained wide utilization despite their intermittency nature. Several solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are connected in series-parallel to achieve the energy demand. In such a system, it is possible that each panel operates differently due to uneven temperature and irradiation that results in uniform and partial shading conditions. Thus, a unique and efficient mechanism is required to extract maximum power from uniformly and partially shaded PV systems. Numerous maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods have been developed to increase the efficiency and lifetime of photovoltaic systems. This study provides a unique, in-depth, and organized review of MPPT methods under four categories: classical, intelligent, optimization, and hybrid techniques. All possible selection benchmarks are considered to do a comprehensive review, which is not deliberated in the existing review literature. Based on the selection benchmarks, the advantages and disadvantages of each MPPT technique under different categories are summarized in tabulated form. To address the research gaps for further investigation in this field, a concise discussion is included at the end. This review article may find an accessible reference for engineers to understand the most useful MPPT method and to undertake extensive research in PV systems.

Maximum power extraction from the photovoltaic (PV) system plays a critical role in increasing efficiency during partial shading conditions (PSC's). The higher cost and low conversion efficiency of the PV panel necessitate the extraction of the maximum power point (MPP). So, a suitable maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique to track the MPP is of high need, even under PSC's. This study gives an extensive review of 23 MPPT techniques present in literature along with recent publications on various hardware design methodologies. MPPT classification is done into three categories, i.e. Classical, Intelligent and Optimisation depending on the tracking algorithm utilised. During uniform insolation, classical methods are highly preferred as there is only one peak in the P-V curve. However, under PSC's, the P-V curve exhibits multiple peaks, one global MPP (GMPP) and the remaining are local MPPs. Hence, Intelligent and Optimisation techniques came into limelight to differentiate the GMPP out of all LMPPs. Every MPPT technique has its advantages and limits, but a streamlined MPPT is drafted in numerous parameters like sensors required, hardware implementation, tracking in PSC's, cost, tracking speed and tracking efficiency. This present study aimed to address the advancement in this area for further research. Various atmospheric elements like irradiance and temperature, affect the power production and nonlinearity of I-V qualities of solar photovoltaic system. A solution is developed to mitigate the said negative effect, which is the application of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for charge controllers. MPPT is integrated in buck-boost circuit to instantaneously boost the produced energy of the panel towards the battery by regulating its current or voltage of the panel using pulse width modulated signal (PWM). The proposed algorithm utilized is Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and inputs are collected with voltage, current, lux and temperature sensors. The neural network trained the data first while the fuzzy logic generated the rules to guide the system to generate the appropriate value of duty cycle as the output. The fuzzy inference system (FIS) training phase showed that the trimf produced the least inaccuracy of 0.0015666%. meanwhile the testing phase showed an average testing error of 0.086933%.
