Heart beat causes the synchronous body vibration, which can be measured on the spine axis by sensitive force sensor called ballistocardiogram. Ballistocardiogram was a kind of nonstationary physiological signal, which couldn't be analyzed and processed by traditional signal processing method. The generation and acquisition method of ballistocardiogram were explained. As examples of bilinear and linear time-frequency distribution, the Cohen class distribution and wavelet transform were discussed and used in ballistocardigram pseudo-period segment. In addition, the frequency range of ballistocardiogram and the levels of wavelet decomposition were determined by Cohen class distribution, but the performance of exponential distribution is better than that of Wigner-Ville distribution and has a fine correspondence to time domain wave of actual ballistocardigram. The experiment results show that, bilinear and linear time-frequency distribution are both able to divide ballistocardiogram into pseudo-periods corresponding to cardiac cycle, but the segment performance of wavelet decomposition is better than that of Cohen class distribution, and the latter one is terser to realize.

Abstract-Continuous monitoring of health state is important in elder and chronically ill (but otherwise not critical) patients. Ideally, the patient should not be aware of being continuously monitored. This study describes an automatic and non-conscious heart rate monitoring system based on the ballistocardiogram (BCG). The bi-axial BCG can be recorded by two piezoelectric force sensors and high-gain amplifiers. Digital signal preprocessing has been implemented to increase the SNR and an algorithm to automatically detect the heart rate has been evaluated. The high gain required makes the system susceptible to forces other than those related to the cardiovascular system, such as those due to body movements. The sensitivity and positive predictive values obtained are 97.8 % and 98.4 % but if the records where the BCG is masked are discarded, the respective values increase to 99.2 % and 99.5 %. These values are comparable to those typically obtained for the ECG.Kwywords-Heart rate detection, non-conscious monitoring, ballistocardiogram I. En algunos grupos de la población, tales como las personas mayores o enfermos crónicos, es necesario seguir rutinariamente algunos parámetros fisiológicos que indiquen su estado de salud y mantener un registro de dichos parámetros. Esto, junto con otra información médica complementaria, permite establecer un punto de referencia y detectar posibles alteraciones para elaborar diagnósticos apropiados. Todas estas medidas, sin embargo, pierden interés por parte de los pacientes si les exigen trasladarse a un centro de salud o consultorio médico, a la vez que sus frecuentes visitas complican la gestión de los recursos sanitarios y a menudo repercuten seriamente en la situación económica y laboral de los pacientes y sus familiares.Por lo anterior, y también porque algunos parámetros fisiológicos como la frecuencia cardiaca, la temperatura o la presión arterial se alteran por el nerviosismo de un examen rutinario Las medidas en personas acostadas [7], [8] son indicadas cuando hay algún riesgo de muerte súbita durante el sueño o para monitorización continua en personas hospitalizadas. La monitorización durante el periodo diurno, en cambio, se puede hacer mientras una persona está sentada, pues en esta posición se pasa gran parte del tiempo. New sensor technologies open possibilities for measuring traditional biosignals in new innovative ways. This, together with the development of signal processing systems and their increasing computing power, can sometimes give new life to old measurement techniques. Ballistocardiogram (BCG) is one such technique, originally promising but later replaced by the now very popular electrocardiogram. It's usability was previously limited by the large size of the devices required to record it, and the complex nature of the recorded signal, which gave little information in visual inspection. In this paper, we present how a lightweight and flexible electromechanical film (EMFi) sensor can be used to record BCG. A ballistocardiographic chair, designed to look like a normal office chair, was built and fitted with two sensitive EMFi sensors. Two different measurement setups to record the signal from the EMFi sensors were developed. The first, so-called wired setup, uses a commercial bio-amplifier, and a special pre-amplifier to interface to it. The latter, so-called wireless setup, uses our own hardware to transmit the recorded digitized signals wirelessly to a nearby PC.Both of these systems are presented and their performance evaluated. Also, the suitability, limitations and advantages of the EMFi sensor over existing sensors and methods are discussed. The validity of the EMFi sensor and amplifier output is tested using a mechanical vibrator. Lastly, a summary of signal analysis methods developed for our system is given. The developed systems have be used for medical BCG measurements, and the recordings indicate that the both the systems are functional and capture useful BCG signal components.
