New methods for clinical pathways—Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) and Tangible Business Process Modeling (t.BPM)

Abstract: BPMN and t.BPM are sufficiently suitable for the planned modelling and imaging of CP. The application in medicine is new, and transfer from the industrial process management is in principle possible. BPMN-CP may be used for teaching and training, patient information and quality management. The graphical image is clearly structured and appealing. Even though the efficiency in the creation of BPMN-CP increases markedly after the training phase, high amounts of manpower and time are required. The most sensible an… Show more

“…A typical technique that falls into this category is Business Process Management (BPM), which is a holistic management approach focused on aligning all aspects of an organization with the desires and needs of clients. In the healthcare domain, BPM technologies are mainly used for analyzing clinical pathways [2][3][4], which are standardized and normalized treatment patterns. However, applying BPM techniques to real patient data (e.g., for designing personalized clinical pathways) results in very complex and chaotic graphs.…”

“…They have been used since the 1980s and today are implemented in many hospitals, as there is evidence that they lead to substantial improvements (Ronellenfitsch et al, 2008;Rotter et al, 2010). Because of the workflow-like nature of many CPs they have meanwhile been identified as very promising starting points for the application of workflow modeling, independent of the actual modeling languagebe it BPMN (Grosskopf et al, 2010;Hashemian & Abidi, 2012;Scheuerlein et al, 2012) or even UML activity diagrams (Daniyal & Abidi, 2010;Mauro et al, 2010). Obviously, the existence of defined CPs means great potential for savings both in time and overall effort regarding the creation of workflow models, because the longsome identification of task sequences can be carried out more efficiently.…”
