New Method of Porous Oxide Synthesis: Alumina and Alumina Based Compounds

Abstract: Novelty of the synthesis method is the use of alumina hydroxides with very low initial density ~0.02 g/cm 3 . This porous alumina monolith (PAM) is obtained first by active oxidation of aluminum in a humid atmosphere through a liquid mercury layer. Then, in the second step, a thermal treatment of PAM between 1000 and 1700 °C allows sintering of porous alumina with the density varying between 0.04 and 3 g/cm 3 consisting of -or ¡ -alumina crystallites with submicron or micron size and with specific surface area… Show more

“…The obtained material consisted of amorphous nanofibres with a diameter of $5 nm and a length of $ 150 nm, had high ( $99%) porosity and low density (0.02-0.04 g/cm 3 ) [15][16][17]. The specific surface area, measured after heating at 350 1C to remove adsorbed humidity, is about 300 m 2 /g À 1 with an average size of 10 nm for the mesopores.…”

“…Ultraporous aluminas (UPA) 1, 2 attract considerable interest because of their potential applications in catalysis, filtration, optoelectronics, photonics, etc. They serve as excellent supporting matrixes for active components in the form of monolayer molecules and single nanoparticles 3–5.…”

“…Indeed, at a Si concentration above C Ã Si ¼ 16 mol:%, the doublet undergoes a blue shift to 682.6 and 686.0 nm, which corresponds to a h-Al 2 O 3 environment [18]. It is known that silica treatment shifts the nucleation of a-Al 2 O 3 to temperatures considerably higher than 1250°C, necessary for a phase appearance in pure UPA [9]. Indeed, we have found pure h polymorph after the thermal treatment of TMES-treated UPA at 1400°C during a relatively short time of 4 h. It can therefore be assumed that inclusions of h phase exist in mullite in small quantities, which cannot be observed by XRD.…”

“…The raw UPA samples were grown at room temperature, in humid atmosphere, by oxidation of laminated aluminium plates through a liquid mercury-silver layer [8,9]. The growth rate of these UPA monoliths is $1 cm h À1 .…”
