New locality for the rare sigmodontine Abrawayaomys ruschii (Rodentia, Cricetidae) in Argentina, with comments about its regional conservation status

Abstract: We document a new locality for the rare sylvan sigmodontine Abrawayaomys ruschii from Misiones, Argentina. The individual, recognized by its distinctive spiny hairs, was recovered from a scat of an ocelot, Leopardus pardalis (Mammalia, Felidae). This record contributes to fill the gap between previous localities. RESUMENDocumentamos una nueva localidad para el raro ratón selvático Abrawayaomys ruschii, en la provincia de Misiones, Argentina. “…Addenda to Cruz et al (2019) "New locality for the rare sigmodontine Abrawayaomys ruschii (Rodentia, Cricetidae) in Argentina, with comments about its regional conservation status" In a recent contribution, Cruz et al (2019) reported a new locality for Abrawayaomys ruschii in Misiones, Argentina. As with other records of small mammals in which authors considered that voucher specimens were sufficiently diagnostic such that it was not necessary to illustrate them (e.g., the first record of Loxodontomys micropus for Mendoza, Argentina [Pardiñas et al, 2003]; the first records of Galea leucoblephara and Reithrodon auritus for Península de Valdes, Chubut, Argentina [Pardiñas et al, 2001]), we did not provide photographs of the unmistakable spines of Abrawayaomys in that note.…”

“…In this addenda, we include a photograph of the spines of this rodent recovered from the scat of an ocelot (Fig. 1), as reported in Cruz et al (2019). We hope this would be of help to other researchers working with carnivore scats in areas where A. ruschi has not been detected, but might occur.…”
