New instrument for microbeam analysis incorporating submicron imaging and resonance ionization mass spectrometry

Abstract: A new reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer for surface analysis has been developed that incorporates a Schwarzschild all-reflecting microscope. The instrument is configured for secondary ion mass spectrometry and secondary neutral mass spectrometry using either ion beam bombardment or laser ablation for sample atomization. The sample viewing and imaging system of this instrument enables in situ laser microanalysis with a lateral resolution below 1 μm. The major advantages of using a Schwarzschild object… Show more

“…Barium isotopic compositions were measured by Resonant Ionization Mass Spectrometry (RIMS) on the CHARISMA instrument at Argonne National Laboratory, which has been previously described in detail elsewhere (Ma et al, 1995;Nicolussi et al, 1997b). A description of the most recent version of the instrument, along with a detailed procedure for the barium analysis, is given in a companion article in this issue (Savina et al, 2003).…”

“…Our experiments utilized facilities in the Materials Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory including an instrument known as CHARISMA (CHicago-Argonne Resonant Ionization Spectrometry for Micro-Analysis) [24,13] that will be described below. The instrumental setup is outlined, including the details of the laser cavities used for the excitation and ionization 1 of the isotopes of interest here.…”

“…The instrument used to perform RIMS in these studies is known as the Chicago-Argonne Resonant Ionization Spectrometer for Microbeam Analysis (CHARSIMA) [24,13]. CHARISMA combines imaging capabilities (< 1 µm spatial resolution) with the ability to measure element concentrations below one part per billion (ng/g).…”

“…The resonance ionization scheme used in these measurements was developed at ANL and is rather special. [5] Only two green lasers are needed to ionize Ti from its ground state (a3Fz) and a multiplet level of the ground state (a3FJ 170 cm" 1 above the ground state.…”
