New Insights on Unique Features and Role of Nanostructured Materials in Cosmetics

Abstract: The cosmetics industry has boomed in recent years as one of the markets that holds enormous growth potential. Among several industrial sectors, the cosmetics industry has considered nanotechnology-based principles and implemented in product management practices. Out of 1000 registered products available on the global market, up to 13% were referred to as products for cosmetic use. A large number of nanoscale materials with unique physicochemical properties are currently being used in the cosmetics formulations… Show more

“…On the one hand, consumers are seeking personalized products respecting nature and obtained through smart technologies [2]. On the other hand, they are also reallocating their interests to high-performance products that could better fulfill their needs and priorities [3]. In this contest, beauty masks represent for the consumer the possibility to access a treatment with the same skin benefits obtainable from beauty center treatments.…”

“…Of the leading industrial sectors, the cosmetic sector was among the first to consider nanotechnology-based products, and it is currently a global leader in the incorporation of nanotechnologies in the development of new products [ 2 ]. In fact, a large number of nanosystems are commonly used in cosmetic formulations to encapsulate active ingredients [ 3 ]. The nanosystems employed in cosmetic products are made up of a variety of chemical compounds and compositions that are formulated in the nanometric range, and, owing to different supramolecular structures, include vesicular nanostructures (liposomes, niosomes), liquid nanoemulsions and nanoparticles [ 4 , 5 ].…”

“…The success of cosmeceutical productions primarily depends on safety; low costs; and the ability to maintain the active ingredient, deliver it in a biologically active form, and exert a biological effect through known mechanisms [ 19 ]. To overcome these latter issues, particularly related to unsuitable chemical properties, some encapsulation and nano-formulation methods were developed to greatly improve drug delivery and effectiveness [ 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ].…”
