Vertical differential structural deformation (VDSD), one of the most significant structural characteristics of strike -slip fault zones (SSFZs) in the Shunbei area, is crucial for understanding deformation in the SSFZ and its hydrocarbon accumulation significance. Based on drilling data and high-precision 3-D seismic data, we analyzed the geometric and kinematic characteristics of the SSFZs in the Shunbei area. Coupled with the stratification of the rock mechanism, the structural deformations of these SSFZs in different formations were differentiated and divided into four deformation layers. According to comprehensive structural interpretations and comparisons, three integrated 3-D structural models could describe the VDSD of these SSFZs. The time-space coupling of the material basis (rock mechanism stratification), changing dynamic conditions (e.g., changing stress-strain states), and special deformation mechanism of the en echelon normal fault array uniformly controlled the formation of the VDSD in the SSFZs of the Shunbei area. The VDSD of the SSFZs in this area controlled the entire hydrocarbon accumulation process. Multi-stage structural superimposing deformation influenced the hydrocarbon migration, accumulation, distribution, preservation, and secondary adjustments.

Salt-penetrating and non-salt-penetrating tear faults in central Tarim Basin

We examined two tear faults, namely, Nos. 4 and 7 Faults, in Tarim Basin to investigate how a tear fault penetrates the salt layer. Using high-quality seismic data, we showed that No. 4 Fault penetrates the salt layer, whereas No. 7 Fault does not. We calculated the strata shortening data of Nos. 4 and 7 Faults. For No. 4 Fault, we observed shortening differences between the western and eastern sections in both the supra- and sub-salt strata, whereas for No. 7 Fault, we observed shortening differences only in the supra-salt strata. We demonstrated that under the action of thrusting, a tear fault could penetrate the salt layer if there is a shortening difference in the different positions of the sub-salt strata. A lack of shortening difference in the sub-salt strata implies that a tear fault cannot penetrate the salt layer, even though the sub-salt strata are deformed during thrusting.

Shunbei reservoir is a typical extra-deep carbonate strike-slip fault-controlled reservoir. It has experienced multi-stage tectonic activities, and strong heterogeneity and anisotropy are present in the reservoir. Based on the reservoir cores, imaging logging, pressure build-up curves of typical wells, and dynamic analysis, the reservoir architecture difference between the S-1 and S-5 strike-slip fault zones in the Shunbei area is studied. The results show that the reservoir architecture of the S-5 fault zone is a fault-fracture system formed under the compressive stress environment, with small internal space, poor uid ow capacity, small reservoir scale, and low energy. However, the reservoir architecture of the S-1 fault zone is the dilational space and caves bounded by fault planes formed under the tensile stress environment. The reservoir space could be categorized as the fault-fracture-cave system, which has large internal spaces and uid ow capacity. Moreover, the reservoir is substantial in size and is highly energetic. This study has clari ed the difference in reservoir architecture between the S-1 and S-5 fault zones and could be used as a classic case to predict the fault-reservoir relationship in the Shunbei area. It is of great signi cance for the exploration and development of the extra-deep carbonate strike-slip fault-controlled reservoir.
