New Insights into Gastrointestinal and Pulmonary Parasitofauna of Wild Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in the Harz Mountains of Germany

Abstract: The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) represents an endangered wild felid species. In Germany, it currently occurs in three isolated populations in and around the Harz Mountains, the Palatinate Forest and the Bavarian Forest. Lynx parasitic infections affect animal health and might have an influence on population performance. Therefore, we investigated the protozoan and helminth fauna of free-ranging Eurasian lynx of the Harz population with emphasis on zoonotic parasites. Individual scat samples (n = 24) were collect… Show more

“…Examples are the observation of rodent-associated Hymenolepis diminuta eggs in coyotes from Costa Rica [ 72 ], Habronema sp., Schistosoma sp., Eimeria felina , and Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus eggs in African lions ( Panthera leo ) from Tanzania [ 71 ], Dicrocoelium dendriticum and Trichuris sp. eggs in brown bears from Spain [ 57 ], lagomorph strongylid Protostrongylus pulmonaris originating from preys were observed in Eurasian lynx ( Lynx lynx ) from Germany [ 73 ]. Larval concentration is less often employed but can be accomplished in unfrozen freshly collected samples since larvae remain viable and their morphology remains preserved only for a few hours [ 56 ].…”

“…Furthermore, intestinal protozoa were detected in Lynx genus, such as Sarcocystis neurona infection in Canadian lynx (Lynx canadensis) [10]; Cystoisospora rivolta, Giardia intestinalis, Blastocystis, and Cryptosporidium spp. in Eurasian lynx [11]; and Toxoplasma gondii in Canadian lynx, Iberian lynx, and Eurasian lynx [12][13][14]. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the presence of Sarcocystis, Eimeria, and Cystoisospora spp.…”
