New Insight on Carbonate-Heavy-Oil Recovery: Pore-Scale Mechanisms of Post-Solvent Carbon Dioxide Foam/Polymer-Enhanced-Foam Flooding

Abstract: Summary Carbonate reservoirs, deposited in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB), hold significant reserves of heavy crude oil that can be recovered by nonthermal processes. Solvent, gas, water, and water-alternating-gas (WAG) injections are the main methods for carbonate-heavy-oil recovery in the WCSB. Because of the fractured nature of carbonate formations, many advantages of these production methods are usually in contrast with their low recovery factor. Alternative processes are ther… Show more

“…Both foam and PEF showed much higher MRF/pressure drop than that for surfactant-polymer (SP) injection. The large pressure difference between SP solution and the corresponding PEF represents the excellent mobility control potential (by increasing apparent viscosity) of PEF for heavy oil recovery, especially in heterogeneous reservoirs by diverting the fluid toward low permeability zones or unswept zones due to unfavorable mobility contrast [36,37]. Figure 12 shows the sand pack images during N85 foam and N85 PEF injection in water-saturated media.…”

“…Next, the surfactant is injected to displace the remained oil to increase displacement efficiency. Within the interaction of surfactant and PPG, some of the characteristics of both phases have been changed, such as the dynamic feature of PPG [28][29][30][31][32][33][34].…”
