Ducted wind turbine with multiple blades installed was believed to have a good wind power energy conversion effect. However, little information was available on how to design a good ducted wind turbine. In this paper the effects of blade number on a ducted wind turbine performance is studied. Numerical studies using CFD method to simulate the wind turbine performance were adopted. The duct is a converging-diverging nozzle with the turbine blades located at the throat. A rated output of a 1-kW turbine is adopted as the baseline design. It was found that the blade geometry, stagger angle, and number of blades have different duct blockage effects, and do affect the turbine performance (specifically the power coefficient and torque coefficient, etc.). The fewer number of blades has higher through flow speed, while the larger number of blades provides larger torque. The best power coefficient lies in between the two extremes. The appropriate number of blades is important to match the generator performance curve for optimal overall performance and efficiency.

Feasibility study on implementing wind power generation on moving train is discussed in this Thesis. Wind turbines installation over the train roof is suggested and tested from different aspects. Practical aspects of wind energy utilization are discussed and challenges are highlighted. Calculations of wind power generation for wagon roof mounted turbine are provided and air drag of turbine is discussed. Simulation study is performed in SolidWorks environment to explore air drag influence of wind turbines on moving train. Simulation of wind power generation is also conducted in MATLAB Simulink. Analytically the generated power is compared to mechanical power required to overcome the extra air drag caused by wind turbines over the train wagons.

When approaching a conventional wind turbine, the air flow is slowed down and widened. This results in a loss of turbine efficiency. In order to exploit wind or water flow power as effectively as possible, it was suggested that the turbine should be placed inside a shroud, which consists of 4 wing-shaped surfaces. Two internal air foils improve the turbine performance by speeding up the flow acting on the turbine blades, two external wings create a field of low pressure behind the turbine, thus, helping to draw more mass flow to the turbine and avoid the loss of efficiency due to flow deceleration. The system accumulates kinetic energy of the flow in a small volume where the smaller (and therefore, cheaper) turbine can be installed. A smaller system can be installed inside the bigger one, which would help to accumulate even more kinetic energy on the turbine. * Corresponding author Journal of Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment SystemsYear 2016 Volume 4, Issue 3, pp 279-292 280This method implies kinetic energy summation with local flow redistribution. Both experiments and CFD simulations demonstrate a significant increase in velocity and generated mechanical power in comparison to those for a bare turbine.
