New high‐luminance 50‐ and 43‐in. ACPDPs with an improved panel structure

Abstract: New 50-and 43-in. ACPDPs, which have been developed and commercialized in 2001, show high luminance with improved cell structure and higher Xe-content gas. The specific features of the cell structure are "T"-shaped electrodes and waffle-structured ribs, which are same as those of the previous model. Both the cell structure and gas conditions have been optimized. New green and blue phosphors have also been adopted. As a result, the luminous efficacy has been improved up to 1.8 lm/W by using a black stripe. The … Show more

“…However, the luminous efficiency of PDPs is still below 2 lm/W, which is considerably lower than those of other displays. There have been many attempts to improve the luminous efficiency of PDPs, such as using gas mixture with high Xe concentration [1], delta arrangement cell with a meander barrier rib [2], waffle-structured rib with 'T'-shaped electrode [3], driving waveform with auxiliary short pulse [4,5].…”

“…The threeelectrode structure has become almost a standard structure of commercial PDP products. Nowadays, new structures such as the delta arrangement of the cells combined with a new 'meander' electrode design [2], T-shaped electrode structure combined with WAFFLE structure [3], a high efficiency rib and its optimized electrodes (HERO) structure [4] and segmented electrode in delta color arrayed enclosed sub-pixel (SDE) structure [5] have already been applied to the new generation PDP products to achieve higher luminance efficacies. Besides the improvements in ac-PDP, the shadow mask plasma display panel (SMPDP) also provides a promising solution for TV application to reduce the cost of the panel via its simple manufacturing process and lower driving voltage [6][7][8].…”
