Abstract: New geographical records for 29 species of Myrcia s.l. (Myrtaceae) from the Neotropics are presented here. They occur in the Amazon, Atlantic Forests and "Cerrado" vegetation of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and Peru. The first occurrences of species are also cited for Bolivia, Colombia, Paraguay, and Peru. Short diagnostic descriptions, taxonomic and ecological comments, and geographic distribution maps are also presented.

Two new species of Myrcia from the Atlantic Forest zone of northeastern Brazil are described and illustrated. Both species are restricted to southern Bahia and belong to the BGomidesia clade^of Mycia s.l., as indicated by the irregular opening on the dorsal side of the thecae. Myrcia pulvinata grows in lowland forest and is morphologically similar to M. spectabilis, from which it differs in its pulvinate petioles, cordate leaf base, and ellipsoid fruits. Myrcia serrana is found in montane forest and is morphologically similar to M. ilheosensis, but it can be distinguished from that species by the greater distances between the inter-secondary veins in the leaves and between the marginal veins and the leaf margin, navicular bracteoles, and larger fruits. Conservation status assessments for the two new species based on IUCN criteria are provided.Resumo. Duas novas espécies de Myrcia a Floresta Atlântica do nordeste do Brasil são aqui descritas e ilustradas. Ambas são restritas para o sul da Bahia e pertencem ao Bclado Gomidesia^de Myrcia s.l., devido à abertura irregular das teças. Myrcia pulvinata é encontrada em florestas de terras baixas e é morfologicamente semelhante à M. spectabilis DC., porém diferencia-se por seus pecíolos pulvinados e com base cordada, além de frutos elipsóides. Myrcia serrana é encontrada em Florestas Montanas e morfologicamente semelhante à M. ilheosensis Kiaerskou, porém diferenciando da mesma por sua maior distância entre as nervuras secundárias nas folhas, e maior distância da nervura marginal para a margem da folha, pelas suas bractéolas naviculares e seus frutos maiores. Animals can adjust their diet to maximize energy or nutritional intake. For example, birds often target fruits that match their beak size because those fruits can be consumed more efficiently. We hypothesized that pressure to optimize diet—measured as matching between fruit and beak size—increases under stressful environments, such as those that determine species’ range edges. Using fruit-consumption and trait information for 97 frugivorous bird and 831 plant species across six continents, we demonstrate that birds feed more frequently on closely size-matched fruits near their geographic range limits. This pattern was particularly strong for highly frugivorous birds, whereas opportunistic frugivores showed no such tendency. These findings highlight how frugivore interactions might respond to stressful conditions and reveal that trait matching may not predict resource use consistently.

Three new Amazonian species of the Myrcia splendens group from Brazil are proposed based on morphology and near-infrared spectroscopy of leaves and compared with similar taxa. Myrcia eveae resembles M. splendens and may be recognised mostly by large and oblong leaf blades that tapers abruptly at the apex and large bracts; Myrcia otocalyx also resembles M. splendens, being recognised mainly by pyriform flower buds, campanulate hypanthia that are longitudinally ridged, and sepals of different shapes that are patent on fruit; and Myrcia prismatica is similar to M. deflexa, being recognised essentially by chartaceous leaf blades, pedicels clustered at the tips of inflorescence axes, and oblong fruits with longitudinal edges. Spectral data revealed a unique pattern for each one of the new species and the putative related ones, reinforcing the morphological propositions. This is the first study to use morphology and spectroscopy of leaves combined to propose new species of Myrtaceae. Information on geographical distribution, habitat, conservation status, and an identification key are also provided.
